We Are at AGI but Lack the Infrastructure to Use It

We are at AGI but lack the infrastructure to consolidate advanced AI tools. Of course, it depends on what you consider AGI to be. The definition has become slippery because people often smuggle in their own assumptions without saying so. When many writers and researchers talk about AGI, they are often using themselves and their peers as the standard. They imagine a system that can fully match or exceed a highly educated, highly verbal, technically literate person working inside a narrow professional class. That is a very isolated reference point. It is not the same thing as asking whether artificial systems have reached a level of general intelligence that is already comparable to, or greater than, the practical cognitive output of most human beings on earth. If the question is framed that way, then the answer starts to look very different.

The majority of humanity is not a panel of machine learning researchers, policy analysts, or elite engineers. Most people do not spend their days writing elegant essays, solving abstract problems, or debating edge cases in philosophy of mind. Most work in the world is repetitive, bounded, procedural, and tiring. A large portion of it depends less on rare genius than on endurance, memory, pattern recognition, compliance with routine, and the ability to handle ordinary variation without collapsing. When people insist that we are not at AGI because models still fail at some specialized benchmark or still make mistakes that look absurd to educated users, they are often comparing AI to the wrong population. They are comparing it to the top slice of cognitively advanced countries rather than to humanity as a whole. From the standpoint of all humans on earth, we are pretty much there.

That does not mean AI has become a magical mind that can do everything under all conditions. It means machine intelligence has already crossed the threshold where it can produce useful work across many domains at a level that is good enough to compete with, replace, or pressure the output of enormous numbers of people. Mathematically AI models are regularly producing college level work. They can write, summarize, classify, translate, code, answer questions, imitate administrative reasoning, and generate serviceable analysis at a pace no human can match. Models hallucinate, but so do humans under pressure, fatigue, or limited knowledge. The real issue isn't if they're perfect, but whether they are already generally capable enough to be economically and socially disruptive at scale.

One reason people resist saying this openly is that they are still picturing AGI as a singular event, almost like a ceremony, or what happened in the movie Her. They imagine some clean moment when a machine wakes up, surpasses humanity in every respect, and leaves no room for doubt. But history usually does not move that way. New capabilities enter unevenly and appear in fragments, across platforms, under unstable pricing, with missing pieces that prevent the larger system from cohering. That is much closer to where we are now. We do not lack intelligence, but are lacking the infrastructure to organize it.

What is needed to replace work is AI agents and models that perform objective and common repeated tasks well. The work most exposed is not necessarily the work that is most intellectually prestigious. It is the work that can be broken into clear goals, measurable outputs, and repeated decision patterns. For example, the tools I built for AccelNode focused on job tasks that involved form classification, information verification, and transaction monitoring. These are tasks that are done by humans repeatedly but can be done by agents that only need to involve humans when there is an error or unexpected result.

The more subjective work can still have human involvement. This is not because subjectivity is mystical, but because human beings still matter when judgment, taste, ambiguity, trust, and accountability become central. There is no contradiction in saying that an artificial system can already outperform many people on general cognitive tasks while still leaving wide space for human participation in subjective, interpersonal, and culturally loaded domains.

The reason it seems like we aren't at or near AGI is because the current systems are fragmented. One model has a long memory but weak reasoning. Another can act in software environments but has no durable world model. Another can process images but cannot carry an intention from one day to the next. Another can automate a workflow but cannot revise its own strategy except within a narrow loop. When people say AI still does not feel like AGI, they are often noticing this fragmentation without naming it. What we need for AGI is connecting the physical with digital, human-like memory recall, world models, and self improving agents and models. Once those components are brought into a concentrated ecosystem, the argument shifts from theoretical to practical very quickly.

That is why the missing layer is infrastructure. Intelligence by itself is not enough. It has to be embedded into a durable system. It has to act, monitor, correct, and continue across time. It has to move between screens, databases, sensors, cameras, microphones, software platforms, factories, kitchens, warehouses, and vehicles. It has to connect with economic processes rather than simply impress people in demos. Right now, much of AI is still trapped in the stage where it can astonish an individual user for twenty minutes and then disappear when the tab is closed. That ability is very powerful and has helped a lot of people build tools, but it is not yet civilizationally organized.

There is also the matter of cost. Currently, CapEx for AI building is very expensive. Training, deployment, chips, data centers, cooling, and energy are all expensive, and that creates a barrier between technical possibility and broad implementation. A lot of people confuse this economic bottleneck with a capability bottleneck. They assume that because the full system has not spread everywhere, the intelligence itself must not be ready. But those are two different questions. Over time the cost will come down as energy demands are met. That is how large technical systems usually move. Eventually they are going to become normalized infrastructure.

This matters globally because advancements in AI are happening faster than advancements in developing countries. Many of them will never reach the standard of where the top countries today were 100 years ago. There used to be a ladder. Countries industrialized, built out educational systems, created administrative capacity, expanded middle classes, and gradually moved through labor intensive stages on the way to higher productivity. AI changes that path. If machine systems can perform increasing amounts of cognitive and clerical work before many societies ever build a broad white collar economy, then the historical order of advancement changes. Some societies may be pulled forward by cheap access to artificial cognition. Others may be bypassed, unable to compete either with advanced economies or with automated systems.

This is already visible in labor markets. Right now a common theme for a tech company is to fire 5000 American workers to then turn around and hire 20,000 people in India. This has been happening in multiple industries for over 30 years but it continues to this day. Everyone understands the logic or why. If you can get acceptable work for less money, companies will reorganize around that fact. Yes your product and customer service inevitably decline in quality but it's not so bad that you lose your customer base. Especially if your company essentially has a monopoly on services. But what happens when instead of hiring cheap labor for a job, you could pay another company for advanced agents that work 24/7 and constantly improve themselves? Outsourcing was one phase of globalization. Artificial labor is another. The first shifted work geographically. The second may remove the need for large categories of human labor entirely, especially where tasks are objective, repeated, and measured against standard outputs. That does not mean every human job disappears. It means the pricing structure of labor changes in a way most societies are not prepared for. What happens to economies that are dependent on foreign companies for work is another topic that is too extensive to get into right now.

There is something historically strange about this moment. We have entered a unique phase of human history where something artificially created continues to get better than its own creators. Human beings have always made tools, but tools were usually static compared to the maker. A hammer does not improve itself. A conveyor belt does not revise its own operating logic. Even software for most of its history required human programmers to update it in a relatively explicit way. AI introduces a different pattern. We are now building systems that can participate in the process of improving the very functions they perform. That does not make them alive in a mystical sense. It just makes them historically new. The old relation between maker and tool starts to weaken when the tool can contribute to its own advancement.

This is where people often get distracted by cinematic imagery. In the future at fast food places, you are not going to see an android walking around in a McDonalds imitating a human. It is not practical and is more sci-fi. That vision is appealing because it gives people a concrete image, but it is the wrong one. Most of the future will not arrive as imitation humans doing theatrical versions of human labor. It will arrive through interfaces, logistics, software, sensors, and specialized machinery. What we will see are more screens for self selection. The cooking process is done mainly by machines, possibly even packaging. You might see one or two humans in the restaurants to monitor the machines or help customers with unique requests. That outcome is more likely because it does not require building a fully human shaped worker for an environment that does not need one. It only requires replacing functions one by one with whatever combination of automation is cheapest and most reliable.

That distinction matters beyond fast food. People often think automation has failed if it does not look like a robot person. But economic systems do not care about aesthetics. They care about throughput, consistency, liability, maintenance, and cost. The physical world will not be transformed by humanoid theater at every corner. It will be transformed by linking digital intelligence to physical systems in narrow, cumulative, highly profitable ways. Warehouses, call centers, drive-thrus, pharmacies, ports, offices, and customer service pipelines will not suddenly become science fiction sets. They will become more stripped down, more instrumented, and less dependent on large numbers of people doing repeatable tasks.

So the claim that we are at AGI but lack infrastructure should not be heard as a boast. It should be heard as a description of where the pressure now sits. The pressure is no longer mainly on making models produce impressive outputs in isolation. The pressure is on stitching together memory, tools, software environments, persistent identity, physical systems, and self correction into a usable whole. Once that happens at scale, many people will retroactively say that AGI arrived earlier than they thought. In reality, it will have arrived earlier than they were willing to admit because they were waiting for a dramatic announcement instead of watching the quiet assembly of a new operating layer for human society.
